During the month of June we get to celebrate our good friend, the ocean. June 8th marks a day to get out of the house, enjoy time with friends or family, and celebrate all things aquatic. Here is a list of fun facts that you can use to totally impress your friends/family this week:
Oceans provide over half of the world’s oxygen and store 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere.
Much like the rainforest, oceans have helped us develop various forms of medicines such as those that fight arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease.
Covering 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean transports heat from the equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns.
The U.S. ocean economy produces 282 billion dollars in goods and services.
Ocean dependent businesses employ almost 3 million people in the U.S.
76% of all U.S. trade involves some form of marine transportation.
The ocean provides much more than just seafood. Ingredients from the sea are found in surprising foods such as peanut butter and soymilk.
Luckily, June 8th falls on a Saturday this year, so there were many events happening all over the United States (and internationally too!). Follow this link to find events that are happening in your area! https://www.worldoceansday.org/events-list
